I very much like this blog post by Robin Black on book promotion, especially:
Whatever your natural inclinations, as an author with a book to sell, you are going to have to become (or fake being) outgoing, highly sociable and downright thrilled to be stared at by—if you’re very, very lucky—a crowd. Not to mention grateful, which is actually very important.

HI Sandra, I enjoyed this blog also and especially agree with the idea that if a reader pays you the compliment to come to see you that means that they are really interested in you and your work. I like it when published authors give inspirational tips to aspiring writers. It always helps to know that authors will share their own lessons from bitter experience with others.
Jan, I agree -- readers are our treasure.
